Listen to what a person is really saying: online daters aren’t always truthful

June 5, 2009

1178168_abstract_shapeBe honest, we all lie a little. Online daters tend to lie a little- women lie about their age and weight, men lie about their level of baldness and income. Even the photo could be a little lie- maybe it’s 10 years old or the wrinkles were removed in Photoshop.

Keep an open mind during that first meeting. If they don’t look exactly like the photo anymore it may not be a sign to run. The person may be recently laid-off and not yet updated their profile. Little lies are things to watch for, but not quite a red flag. Maybe you forgot to mention you live with your mom.

Now, say your date was talking a big game about golf because you said you loved it but they never actually played. It’s your call how upset to be. Dating is like applying for a job, your resume always sounds better but a first day on the job weeds out the liars pretty quick. It will give you good insight to call the person on it, if they instantly own up to the lie and apologize, maybe you can overlook this one. Tune in to your gut for the rest of the date, and pay attention to other little lies that surface.

There are some lies that are just plain dangerous, like someone being underage or still married. If you played it safe, you can just drive yourself home and find someone more honest.
