How to make online dating safer: things to watch out for

1181206_radiation___Dating online can be a fun and easy way to meet local people and get to know them before the romance begins. It is important to keep your guard up when going from online to real dates, and here is some advice that can keep you safe.

The first date should always be in a public place. Tell someone where you are going, drive yourself, and pay for your half of the bill. At this stage in the game, you are just seeing if the friendly online connection leads to sparks. If things are going well, wait for future dates to go somewhere more secluded.

Trust your instincts and stay alert. Your date seems respectful and safe, but stay tuned to red flags. If something feels wrong it probably is and you have every right to excuse yourself. Keep your cell phone on you and call that friend you already notified about the date if you are going to stay out longer than you thought.

When out for the first time, avoid alcohol. Nothing screws up judgment quite like alcohol, so hold off. Plus, you still have to drive yourself home.

Want a second date? Give out your cell number and wait another date or two until giving out your address. Stick to public places and maybe even go on a double date. Your friends might see something you didn’t, if they have worries, listen.
